Double K’s Take
2019 NFL Draft
The 1st Round (Top 10)
Introduction
This is literally the night that kids dreams come true, young men at colleges all around the country wait to see if their name is going to be called to play in the league. Every team from the 49ers to the Raiders to the Cardinals all have immediate needs so who can fill the holes they need to right away? Let's take a look at the 1st round of the draft...
Round 1 Pick 1 - Arizona Cardinals (NFCW) QB Kyler Murray - Oklahoma Sooners - Grade: A
This was the marriage that had to happen, almost from the moment that HC Kliff Kingsbury was hired. They tried to pull the swerve even went as far as to call a couple of other prospects and tell them they were still in the mix. You and i knew though this was going to happen, simply because it was meant to be. This kid is athletic and smart and reminds most experts of Seahawks QB Russell Wilson and that will be huge for the Cardinals. I give the this pick an A because if this goes the way i think it will this makes the NFC West a 4 team race...
Round 1 Pick 2 - San Francisco 49ers (NFCW) - DE Nick Bosa - Ohio State Buckeyes - Grade: A
Another expected pick another A grade, this time for the San Francisco 49ers. They 49ers add Nick Bosa (little brother of Chargers DE Joey Bosa) the man they have truly targeted from the beginning. He will add to what was an anemic pass rush for the 49ers. Deforest Buckner was the top sacker with 12. Now they have added a second possible 10+ sack player to that defense word has it they are shoppin Solomon Thomas as well to give these new players some more reps on the field. We will see how this plays out in the coming days. I give them an A because adding Bosa to what was already one of the best front 7’s in the NFL only makes them better heading into 2019...
Round 1 Pick 3 - New York Jets (AFCE) - DT Quinnen Williams - Alabama Crimson Tide - Grade: A
The Jets needed to add an interior lineman to their young and burgeoning defensive front, Williams is considered by some the best defensive player in the draft. I would say that the Jets got him at a steal and he instantly makes the Jets better and the additions of Leveon Bell and this kid, this team won't be a pushover in the AFC West next year i will tell you that...
Round 1 Pick 4 - Oakland Raiders (AFCW) - DE Clelin Ferrell - Clemson Tigers - Grade B+
The Raiders 1st pick in the draft they meet a need and on their defensive line, this kid will be expected to replace a future hall of famer. I think that they could have done better with a Josh Allen or Montez Sweat. But this was who Jon Gruden wanted and who could blame him the kid is s stud who should have an immediate impact on the field this upcoming season. The Raiders still have two picks in this draft and they will have to continue to plug holes in the squad to get themselves back to contending. I give them a B+ grade because i don't understand the pick this high i believe this is a kid they could have gotten later in the 1st.
Round 1 Pick 5 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NFCS) - ILB Devin White - LSU Tigers - Grade: A
Word has it that this was the choice for Tampa Bay the whole time, and if that's true i love it 100%. White is a stud that can step in a fill the hole that was left with the departure of ILB Kwon Alexander to San Francisco. The Buccaneers are a team that will be a force next year if QB Jameis Winston can get it together and be the franchise QB he was drafted to be. I give this pick a A because this was a immediate help pick and he fills an immediate need. This will be one of the best picks in this years draft.
Round 1 Pick 6 - New York Giants (NFCE) - QB Daniel Jones - Duke Blue Devils - Grade: B+
The Giants go out and do what everyone thought they would do and get their QB, only thing is it's not the QB everyone thought they would take. Everyone thought that Haskins would be the one taken at this spot but evidently the Giants scouts and GM like this kid better. Don't know much about him but i know we will have to wait to see what he can do because Eli isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I gave them a B+ for that reason we will have to wait and see how this develops as the years move forward...
Round 1 Pick 7 - Jacksonville Jaguars (AFCS) - DE Josh Allen - Kentucky Wildcats - Grade: A
Most mock drafts had this kid going in the top 5 picks, some even had him going as high as 2 to san fran. Alas all of that was a smoke screen and he fell to a top notch defense that lost a great pass rusher in Dexter Fowler Jr and replaces him with a stud of LB at #7. This kid will plug in and have an immediate impact for the Jaguars who look to get back to being the best defense in football to add to the arrival of Nick Foles to stabilize the QB position. These reasons and so many more is why i give the Jags an A for this pick..
Round 1 Pick 8 - Detroit Lions (NFCN) - TE TJ Hockenson - Iowa Hawkeyes - Grade: A
The Lions went out and got themselves a stud from what is turning out to be Tight End U. This would be the 1st of two Iowa Tight end that would be drafted in the 1st round this year. Hockenson shared the field with Noah Fant last season and was still able to produce. For those of you wondering who the other great tight end from Iowa is….its only the NFL leader for yards by a TE San Francisco 49er George Kittle. I give them a A because if he is half as good as Kittle the Lions are going to be good next year...
Round 1 Pick 9 - Buffalo Bills (AFCE) - DT Ed Oliver - Houston Cougars - Grade: A
Just like everyone else in this round pretty much the Bills get an A for this pick soley because of the value of the player that they took, Oliver was expected to go as high as #4 to the Raiders, alas that was not to be. He slides to the Bills at number 9 and give the Bills a good young piece to add to their defense and make themselves even more of a force in the AFC East which is shaping up the be a defensive division despite the presence of the great Tom Brady…
.
Round 1 Pick 10 - Denver Broncos - Traded to Steelers (AFCN)(2019 1st (20), 2019 3rd) - ILB Devin Bush - Michigan Wolverines - Grade: B+
In the first of many trades that would happen in the 1st round, the Pittsburgh Steelers trade up from the 20th pick to get their guy. The addition of Bush to the Steelers defense is to help fill the gap left by the absence of Ryan Shazier (who is recovering from spinal surgery). Bush can immediately help the defense and help the Steelers return to the playoffs after missing the boat last year...
Rest of Round 1 in the next post..
