The Pelicans got 1st shot at Boogie...
This summer was a summer filled with big moves by big players in the NBA landscape. I recently wrote and article on the move by the best player in the game to LA. How that impacted the East the West and this years NBA Playoffs. The hype behind LBJ going to the Lakers and the LA team competing with the Dubs for the Western Conference crown the Warriors have had a stranglehold on for the past 4 years. All of that was considered to happen if the Lakers also managed to snatch Kawhi Leonard from the Spurs to pair with LBJ. Before we get into how all of that went down (Lakers never ended up with Kawhi), Let's look at an interesting story out of NOLA as they were looking to re sign Boogie cousins and just plain failed to do so. The story goes that they offered Cousins a contract of about $10M a year and he wanted more, so they withdrew their offer and let him hit the open market. This seemed like it was going to spell disaster for Boogie because there doesn't seem to be much interest in what was once considered to be the “Best Big Man in the League”.
The day the rest of the league stood still...
If this had been 3-4 years ago when Boogie was healthy this matchup probably never happens. Primarily because there would have been at least 10 suitors for the disenfranchised Center. But since he is coming off of a Achilles injury and there is no telling how his body will respond. The league played hot potato with Cousins as no one would even send him a call. That surprised me, because even if DMac is only half of what he used to be he is better than over half of the starting Centers in the league. But alas the league refused to take a chance on him. That is until he started making calls himself, word has it that he may have called the Lakers about a team up with LeBron but word has it they weren't interested. Then he placed the call to the Warriors and Bob Myers answered the call...
The Warriors win the FA lotto and land Boogie...
This past season the Warriors finished off back to back chips and it looked like they couldn't get any better. As long as they brought back most or all of the same pieces they should be right back there again next year. Then they lost McGee and some thought that this was the beginning of the end for the Dynasty. Then Bob Myers got that phone call and the Dubs were back on the top of the mountain again as they managed to sign on of the biggest free agents on the market. Cousins is coming off a 25 and 12 season and steps into a position where he doesn't have to contribute immediately and he can finish his rehab knowing that the Dubs don't really need him until the playoffs early next year (Word has it he will be back by Jan-Feb plenty of time to get acclimated to his role on the team. Now this has most people furious calling it “Unfair” and “Not Fun Anymore” this i disagree with this will be a extremely interesting season as we see if the Warriors can solidify their spot as one of the best dynasty in sports, or will someone knock them off. Who knows??
