“Celtics beat Warriors 92-88 in Boston” 11/16/17
“Celtics had won 14 straight at that point”...
This year in the NBA we have had a lot of shake up, you had the free agency frenzy that happened this offseason as teams were giving away stars in trades. There were also a lot of free agents who went there own way and joined teams with other superstars to try to knock off the Warriors or stop a potential 4th meeting between Warriors/Cavs in the NBA Finals. Essentially i thought that this would be a futile task as both the Cav’s and Warriors made moves to get better this offseason. The Warriors added Casspi and Young, the Cav’s added Rose, Thomas, Wade, Jesus and tried to sign GOD but he was neutral in this feud. So with all that talent who was going to challenge either of these teams on their way to a 4th straight clash. Then i looked at the Boston Celtics....
The Celtics were kind of unassuming as they only made 1 or 2 moves this offseason, the 1st move was to sign free agent swingman F Gordon Hayward. They signed him to a 5 yr contract and solidified that they will be a great team heading into this season. At that time they had IT, Hayward and Crowder as well as a host of young talent and draft picks. They were already looking better than last years team and that team went to the ECF and took the Cav’s to a Game 7. Then they went out and added another player to the mix and in what seems to be a addition by subtraction situation the Celtics got even better after sending All Star PG Isiah Thomas and Crowder and the Nets 1st round pick in 2018 to the Cavaliers and all they got back in return was Kyrie Irving and a pick…..
This changed an entire dynamic in the eastern conference and added a new team to look out for, the Celtics were already a threat to the Cav’s last year because they play great defense and had a couple of good scorers. Then they went and got the one guy for the Cav’s that had always been a Warrior killer and that was Kyrie. He has been a nuisance for the Dubs during this whole run. He was the reason that the Cav’s beat the Warriors in the 2016 Finals with his last second dagger in Game 7. He and he alone had been a giant killer when it came to the Warriors. So when you lose the defensive liability that is Thomas and replace him with Kyrie and you replace Crowder with a bona fide All Star in Hayward you have a very dangerous team….
In the end that is what this game last week proved that this Celtics team is even better than we thought, they didn't have the 2nd best player on the team in Hayward (out all season after breaking his ankle in game 1). They lost the 1st 2 games of the season and have now won 17 straight games in a row and sit on top of the Eastern Conference unlike the King and the Cavs who sit a couple of spots behind them. The Celtics have beaten a lot of good teams in this stretch including the defending champs. If you haven't figured out that the Celtics are a threat to win the franchise's 18th title this season….well then you just aren't paying attention…
