Double K’s Take: 49ers and the Jimmy G trade...
November 22, 2017
The 49ers trade the Patriots a 2nd round pick in 2018 for backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo
The 49ers have their QB of the future!!!....
Jimmy Garoppolo 6’2” 225lbs drafted in 2014 in the 2nd round by the New England Patriots out of Eastern Illinois, he has played in 17 games in his career (started like 2) and has 63 completions, 690 yards passing with 5 TD’s to 0 INT’s.
This is what the 49ers gave up their really low 1st, high 2nd round pick for what current head coach Kyle Shanahan considers to be his QB of the future. This now has multiple levels to it because the sample size of Jimmy G’s career isn't enough to feed a starving baby. Only 17 games, Only 3 starts but evidently this was good enough for Shanahan and Lynch to pit their futures on this kid. I do expect him to play at some point this season before the 49ers give him the extension that he wants. Now what i expect to see out of him is just a basic above average understanding of the playbook and good decision making. I can get behind this choice as long as there is a long term plan in place….
The end result should be positive as Jimmy G came in highly touted from college and was widely renowned as the heir to Tom Brady as the Pats next great QB. This was backed up by the fact that for a few years Belichick was unwilling to trade him or let him go. Next year he would be a free agent and the amount he would command in the open market was more than the Patriots are willing to pay a backup. So here we sit with the 49ers with a ton of cap space next season and the QB of the future already on the roster. It looks like Kyle and John are moving this team in the right direction, they just have a few things they need to fix (O-Line, DB’s, WR’s would be a good start). The bottom line is that the 49ers will be good again and the odds are that Jimmy G will be leading the way...
