This week i'm going to take a second to explore a part of the sports world i don't dive into often...the world of MMA. This is a world full of blood and violence, a world where if you have an issue with someone you may have the option of getting in the octagon to settle your differences. When you are good enough you get to take on the champ and have a chance to solidify yourself in the history of this sport as a champion. Some pass this test with flying colors, the rest end up face down on the matt. I am going to take a look today at 3 champions who i expect to hold their belts for a long while. Let's start in the light heavyweight division with our shortest reigning champ Daniel Cormier...
Light Heavyweight Champion: D.Cormier (Since 5/23/15, 17-1 , Wrestling Style, FOO San Jose,CA): This kid Cormier is just a beast i watched footage of him fighting right before his fight and only loss against Jon “Bones” Jones and i was impressed. Impressed enough to think he had a realistic shot at beating Jones, unfortunately he proved me wrong that time. Fast Forward months later and Jones has been stripped of the title and Cormier gets to battle Anthony “Rumble” Johnson for the title. This time he doesn't let the opportunity get away and he beats Johnson by decision to win the title. In his most recent title defense he retained against a strong opponent in Gustafsson but he kept the belt by split decision. I'm not sure how long Johnson can hold onto the belt?? Until Jones returns this may be his division to dominate, and i think he will!!!
Middleweight Championship: Chris Weidman (Since 7/6/13, 13-0 , MMA Style, FOO Baldwin, NY): Another stellar competitor in the octagon Weidman bust onto the scene as a young cat and impressed the entire MMA world as he not only beat but knocked the longest reigning champ in the division Anderson “The Spider” Silva. In their rematch a few months later Silva looked ready for the challenge but broke his leg over a Weidman block early in the match and we haven't heard from him since outside of a fight against Nick Diaz. I think that Weidman will continue to dominate this division and be a champ for at least a couple more years….
Women's Bantamweight Championship: Ronda Rousey (Since 12/6/12, 12-0 , Judo,Boxing Styles, FOO Santa Monica,CA): As the longest reigning of this new generation of champions, she has show over the past 3 years that she can do it just as well as the men do. She has dominated every opponent she has come across and made them look silly in the process. There has even been talk of Ronda crossing over and climbing into the ring with men (not that Dana will ever let that happen). Ronda has been one of my favorite champions in the UFC and she has done a lot to draw attention to the womens MMA world but I believe that her dominance over lesser opponents could lose a lot of casual fans to become disinterested in the division. For now though she is on top of the world, exactly where she deserves to be….
