Double K’s Take: What is going on with the 49ers and all these players retiring???

Well the San Francisco 49ers had a rough season last year and that is putting it lightly. The offseason that was to follow would be no kinder to the men in the Scarlett and Gold. So lets look at the offseason the 49ers lost 3 key players in their runs over the last few years. Some retirements were unexpected like the retirement of the young LB Chris Borland. I completely understand his concerns about bodily injury but shouldn’t these concerns have come up before he was drafted and signed a rookie contract? But in this post I am going to look at 3 key departures that I feel will impact the 49ers in the 2015 season…

MLB Patrick Willis (Ole Miss) (Retired after the 2014 Season): Now I am told that with Patrick it was a a injury thing that forced him into retirement so early in his career. Patrick was the stout leader of the 49ers defense and on many occasions made big plays that won them games. When he retired it was a shock to the 49ers fan base but not to those who knew him and played with him year after year and saw how much pain that ankle injury was for him to play on. So though it saddens me we had to wish Patrick well and move on…

DE Justin Smith (Missouri) (Retired after the 2014 Season): Smith’s retirement was one that I was hoping wouldn’t happen. I was hoping that Tomsula would be able to convince him to come back. Unfortunately he decided it was time to hang it up on a good note. So he will ride off into the sunset and 49ers look to replace him with a combination of Armstead, Jerrod Eddie and Dockett. But can they produce the way J.Smith did in his valuable service with the 49ers…

RT Anthony Davis (Rutgers) (Retired after the 2014 season): This was one that shocked me when it was announced. Basically the reasoning behind this was the fact that Davis needed a break after going so hard for the 3 years of his career. So basically he was burned out on football and wanted to take a year off. Hopefully he will come back to the 49ers if he comes back out of retirement and all will be good again. But for now im just going to sit back befuddled by the retirement and hope for the best…
