Double Ks Take: 2015 NBA Draft Review (Overall)

NBA Draft (6/25/15) Brooklyn, NY

Ok this year’s draft was predictably crazy that is a weird thing to say. The number one pick was who we expected, as the T’Wolves gets them some low post help. The Lakers throw the 2st curve of the draft by taking the point guard sensation from Ohio State. From then on it was just interesting to watch. In the coming weeks I will be looking at how these draft picks will impact their teams, especially the west coast ones. For now we are taking a look at the top 10…

R1 (1) T’Wolves – Karl- Anthony Towns (Center, Kentucky) – Towns is a beast, that is about the only way I could describe his skill set. He has a good mid range game and a great low post game. He will be able to learn from Kevin Garnett and develop his game at the NBA level. I think that Towns will help make the Wolves contenders soon and possibly championship winners in the near future…

R1 (2) Lakers – D’Angelo Russell (Point Guard, Ohio State) – Now the Lakers needed to make a pick that will solidify their future as this is Kobe Bryant’s final year. Can Julius Randle take over after the ACL tear that put him down for the whole season last year? This we will have to see, for now the Lakers went with a versatile point guard that can pass and shoot the 3, Sound Familiar? They have to look to compete with the NBA Champions….

R1 (3) 76ers – Jahlil Okafor (Center, Duke) – Okafor was supposed to be the #2 pick allowing the 76ers to land Russell and get themselves a franchise point guard. Instead the Lakers get their guy and the Sixers get another low post player to add to their collection. Even though it may seem like a bad situation I think that Okafor needs some time to grow into his NBA body and truly be effective as a low post player…

R1 (4) Knicks – Kristaps Porzingis (Power Forward, Spain) – This pick was the 1st chance for the Phil Jackson to make a real impact on his Knicks team. This pick was not successful as far as the fans were concerned. They wanted flash, they wanted pop and in the end they got… well a guy that if he is everything they say he is then he is the next Dirk. He has range and if he picks up the NBA game he has the ability to have a impact along a player like Carmelo Anthony…

R1 (5) Magic – Mario Hezonja (Shooting Guard, Spain) – Hezonja is another one that is a great player, but it’s a pick that doesn’t seem to make sense, unless they plan on moving him or Oledipo to the point guard position? But both are skilled scorers so in my opinion think the early years of the Curry/Ellis pairing in GS from years ago. Overall I think that Hezonja will have a small impact on this talented Magic team…

R1 (6) Kings – Willie Cauley-Stein (Center, Kentucky) – This was a blessing in disguise for the Kings this was a player that was expected to go much higher in the draft. He was projected to go as high as #2 but instead slipped to the Kings to give them one of the youngest and biggest front lines in the NBA. The combination of Cousins, Stein and Gay should create some havoc in the west but they still aren’t championship contenders just yet…

R1 (7) Nuggets – Emmanuel Mudiay (Point Guard, China) – The pick of Mudiay by the nuggets seemed to seal the fate of current starter Ty Lawson. This kid is simply too good to sit on the bench so at minimum he will be taking minutes away from Lawson who is still rather young himself. So what will the Nuggets do with their dilemma at the point? So good pick for Denver and bad news for Lawson…

R1 (8) Pistons – Stanley Johnson (Small Forward, Arizona) – The pick of Johnson will I assume replace the loss of Josh Smith. He a big forward that I got to see play a little bit watching him beat up on my Golden Bears. What type of impact he will have on that team now is yet to be seen, but I do believe that he will have a impact in this league…

R1 (9) Hornets – Frank Kaminsky (Power Forward, Wisconsin) – Kaminski to me was one of the steals of the draft. Like Stein at number 6, I think that MJ and the scouts in the Hornets franchise got a steal with this one. Kaminski is one of the truest “stretch four’s” in the draft and I think in that team he will be able to come in and run and gun with that young team lead by PG Kemba Walker. Great pick for the Hornets…

R1 (10) Heat – Justice Winslow (Shooting Guard, Duke) – I don’t know much about this kid, he was an all star at Duke. Will this kid be splitting his minuets with the great DWade, or will he take over from Wade after this year is up. Ultimately this was a great pick for the Heat and a great place for Winslow to grow and turn into a superstar in this league…
