Double K’s Take: 2015 NFL Draft – San Francisco 49ers…

This year going into the NFL Draft the 49ers were in shambles. They had one heck of a free agency period as they had 2 ILB retire within a week of each other. They watched their best receiver walk away and be replaced by a younger better version of him. They watched Frank Gore walk away and go to the Eagles and then to the Colts, that one really hurt. Now we go in with big holes on the defensive and offensive lines. They looked to fill those needs but first up they had to secure some spots on the defensive side of the ball….

R1 P17 (from Chargers) DT Arik Armstead (6’7” 292lbs, Oregon Ducks) – The fact of the matter is even if Justin Smith doesn’t retire the 49ers are going to have to look for his successor. I think they may have found him in the young Mr. Armstead, he has a lot of length at 6’7” and he has good speed. I would love to see him in that Abreyou Franklin like role and just stuffing up the middle. Right now that job is veteran DT Glen Dorsey’s to lose. But this kid can make an impact…

R2 P46 SS Jaquiski Tartt (6’1” 221lbs, Samford) – Tartt is a big bodied defensive back that can be a future help to the 49ers. He is going to have to make an adjustment to learn to play the corner back position at the NFL level. But the upside on this kid is huge so we could expect to see him take on a similar role to what Jimm Ward did last season as the 49ers are pretty set at the safety position with Bathea and Reid…

R3 P79 OLB Eli Harold (6’3” 247lbs, Virgina Cavaliers) – Eli will not make and instant impat because I don’t think there is any way that he is overtaking Brooks or Smith for either of their starting spots and he wont be beating out Lynch for his spot either. This kid will look to make an impact 1st on Special Teams and then in spot duty on the field. He has decent pass rushing skills but he will serve them better in passing downs as a coverage line backer…

These three look to make a quick impact on the field other picks like WR DeAndre Smelter (GaTech) and TE Blake Bell (OKLA) will look to find their spots in new offensive coordinator Geep Chryst system. Not to mention the 5 WR’s they picked up as undrafted free agent’s. Overall it wasn’t the best draft that the 49ers have had in recent memory. I think it will help out a lot but I don’t think we have seen the last of the playoff threat 49ers. But only time will tell with that…
