I sit back here and write this post to tell you that the
question in the title Is the one that goes thru my head every time I watch a
game. The Athletics were one of the top pitching staffs in all of baseball.
They were lead by Sonny Gray and Scott Kazmir for most of the season. That was
good enough to lead them to one of the best records in baseball at the time.
They even added a veteran pitcher in Jon Lester to go “All in” so to speak.
This got them to the wild card game and a loss to the eventual American League
Champs Kansas City Royals. Even in this game though the pitching let them down
as former Cub Jason Hammel gave up the winning run to KC and left the Athletics
reeling…
This season seems to be more of the same as the Athletics
starting pitching seems to be not as strong as last season. That is to be
expected when you lose the pitchers that they lost this off season. The
collapse of the bullpen is the thing that is surprising me. Clippard is doing
ok in the closer roll, but he is not as consistent as Doolittle was in that
role just a season ago. Stallwarts like Abad and company are now going out and
blowing leads as fast as the bats can get them. This had led to the Athletics having
one of the worst records in baseball. Can they recover and make the playoffs this
season? I don’t know…but if they don’t they may not let Bob Melvin keep his
job!! No one wants to see that…
