Double K’s Take: The new leader of the San Francisco 49ers… HC Jim Tomsula…

This time last year Jim Tomsula was a member of the San Francisco 49ers coaching staff, coaching a stout defensive line that would be amongst the NFL’s best. Great lineman like Justin Smith and Glen Dorsey were able to contribute to what was overall an effective season. Now the man that used to work one on one with them on Coach Harbaughs staff, is their head coach. There are a lot on the team that wondered how we got to this point. The 49ers had won 44 games in the last 3 years and it made no sense to blow up the staff that had just achieved 3 straight trips to the NFC Championship Games, 2 Division Titles and 4 consecutive non losing seasons. Alas that is what York and Balke did, they first let go of Coach Harbaugh and then over looked the obvious candidate in DC Vic Fangio and promoting long time staffer Tomsula. This upset Fangio and rightfully so as even I think that he deserved it, instead he is now leading the Chicago Bears defense. On the other side of the ball I liked the release of Greg Roman, he wasn’t a bad coordinator I just think that he would be better suited elsewhere after that debacle of a season. He landed on his feet in Buffalo on Rex Ryan’s staff and I wish him all the best….

Now the 49ers have a new staff a new group of guys that have some very big shoes to fill. Despite going 8-8 last season this team was a lot better than its record showed, with a lot of the pieces from that team returning. Tomsula inherited a good and competent team. Let’s look at who is going to coach underneath him, first on the defensive side of it they promoted Eric Mangini a former head coach with a defensive mind. Now with the same toys that Fangio had and some new ones (via the NFL Draft), I think that Mangini will be a good coach and will keep this 49ers defense relevant in the coming years. And on the offensive side of the ball they promoted Geep Chryst to the OC position. To be honest with you I know nothing about this guy and don’t know what to expect from him. What I hope for is that him and QB Colin Kapernick will work to put together an offense that will highlight Kapernick’s strengths and minimize his mistakes. This would be the best thing for all involved to secure Chryst and Tomsula some job security. In the next coming years this staff will be tested and will have to look over their shoulders because we know that the management is willing to “mutually part ways” with anyone who they feel they don’t want there….
