UFC 172 from
Baltimore, MD
This month’s UFC 172 took place in Baltimore Maryland and it saw a 5
fight card. The Main Event saw MMA legend UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon “Bones”
Jones who is not only one of UFC’s top fighters but some consider him the best
in the game today. His opponent was a man that was on a 20 fight winning streak
and is one of the hardest hitters in MMA, that man is Glover Teixeira. The co
main event saw Anthony Johnson face off again Phil Davis both young and strong
fighters coming up in the game. So getting into the actual card….
Max “Blessed” Holloway vs. Andre “Touchy” Feili (Featherweight
Bout) – With Feili being a year older
and having 3 more inches in reach it should give him an advantage in this
fight. The first round went convincingly to Feile who was dominant through most
of the round. The second round Holloway had a great round and dominated
including blocking at least 3-4 of the 5 takedown attempts by Feili. The third
round was a close one that was dominated by Holloway, late in the round
Holloway hit Feili with a couple of hard shots before taking it down to the
ground and locking in the Guillotine Choke to get the submission victory…

Jim Miller vs. Yancy Medeiros (Lightweight Bout) – Miller a MMA vet was clearly the favorite to win this
fight. He also had a lot more to lose with a shot at the lightweight title on
the line for him. This fight ended
rather quickly as they bounced back and forth for a couple of minutes. When Miller
locked in that Guillotine Choke it was over the tighter he got the less likely
it was that Medeiros wasn’t going to break it and as he went limp the referee
had to stop the fight…

Luke Rockhold
vs. Tim “The Barbarian” Boetch (Middleweight Bout) – This looks like a pretty even matchup with the height
and reach advantage going to the younger Rockhold, which should make him the
favorite but Boetch has the experience advantage. This was another fight that
ended quickly as Boetch got into trouble early and one Rockhold locked on his
legs into a leg triangle and he got a hold of his wrist and locked in the Komura
and forced Boetch to tap. Very exciting match and a serious candidate for “Fight
of the Night”…

“Mr. Wonderful” Phil Davis vs. Anthony “Rumble” Johnson
(Co-Main Event) (Light Heavyweight Bout) – Looking at the fighters this looks like a fight that should be dominated
by Johnson. But with Davis’s grappling skills he may prove to be to be too much
for Johnson. The 1st round clearly went to Johnson; everything that Davis
had to throw at him just wasn’t enough. Davis couldn’t get a single takedown
because Johnson was just too strong. The 2nd round went to Johnson
as well. Davis gave a good run but once again couldn’t get Johnson on the ground
and because of that he looked bad all round. The 3rd round was
clearly won by Johnson just like the rest of the fight. Davis tried really hard
but Johnson was just too powerful and thus won the fight by unanimous decision…

(Light Heavyweight Championship Bout) - Jones
being the champion and the bigger competitor I can a see why he should be the
favorite against a very strong competitor in Teixeira. The crowd has gotten
really rowdy for this main event! The 1st round was won clearly by
Jones as he had the only takedown in the round and landed a impressive spinning
back kick that for me gave the round to him. The 2nd round again won
by Jones he just dominated for most of the round. There was a spot where Teixeira
rocked Jones for a second but Jones recovered. Round 3 once again owned by
Jones he dominated every aspect of this round. Teixeira took shot after shot
from Jones it seemed as if he did what he wanted to do with Glover and there
was nothing he could do about it. Once again the 4th round would go
to the champ Jones just did what he wanted to every time that Teixeira got
anything going Jones would counter and bring it to a stop. At this point the
challenger needed a knockout to get the win. The 5th and final round
would be the only one in which Teixeira looked alive and like he cared. Other than
that this fight was dominated by Jones he pretty much put on a clinic and
stayed inside of Glover all night….

And now for the Contenders to the crown…

Rashad Evans - At 21-3-1 Evans seems to be a viable contender for Jones crown.
He lost to Jones by decision at UFC 145 in April of 2012. So it has been a
couple of years since his last title fight and he has gone 2-1 since beating
Henderson by decision and Sonnen by TKO and losing to Nogueria by decision at
UFC 156. Is Evans the top contender?? Who knows???...

Glover Teixeira – At 22-3 Teixeira is still a beast who was just beaten by a
better man on that night. Glover is a solid competitor and if he can build a
win streak even a quarter of what he has done in recent years then I can see
him competing for the Light Heavyweight Championship again in the future. But
as for anytime soon I just don’t see it happening…

Alexander Gustafsson – At 16-2 Gustafsson is a very imposing fighter as he is one of
the only light heavyweight fighter who can look Jones eye to eye as he stands
at 6’5” he lost by unanimous decision in a great bout at UFC 165 last year.
He has had one fight since and won by KO over Manuwa. So Gustafsson looks
like he could be a contender in the very near future…

Daniel Cormier – Cormier to me is the logical choice as he as seemed to just tear
through the light heavyweight division. He has never faced Jones and is
currently on a 14 fight winning streak having knocked out Patrick Cummings
most recently at UFC 170. He has a upcoming fight against Dan Henderson at
UFC173 next month. I think if he wins that fight his next fight should be
Jones for the title…

Anthony Johnson – With an impressive 17-4 record Johnson is another one that is a
viable candidate to face Jones for the title soon. He just destroyed a very capable
opponent in Phil Davis and extended his current win streak to 7 fights his
last loss was to Vitor Belfort by submission and there is no shame in that.
Johnson is a true contender and a true threat to Jones crown in the coming
months…
