The Chargers just like the Raiders came into this draft with a lot of holes to
fill. They needed to secure their offensive line and they went out and took OT
Fluker from Alabama. Then they shocked the football world by taking much talked
about LB Manti Teo to help replace Shaun Phillips who left after last season. Then
in a big surprise they went out and drafted Golden Bears product WR Keenan
Allen. All of these picks were risk but if they can live up to their best expectations then the Chargers will be a
better team than last year at all 3 positions. So now let’s get on to the big
picks of the draft…
San Diego Chargers
draft recap: (NFL.com Grade: B, My Grade: B) R1 OT D.J. Fluker Alabama, R2 ILB Manti Teo Norte Dame, R3 WR Keenan Allen CAL, R5 CB Steve Williams CAL, R6 DE Tourek Williams FIU, R7 QB Brad Sorenson Southern Utah…
Round 1
1.
R1
P11 – OT D.J. Fluker Alabama – (Pick
Grade: A-): Fluker was thought to have gone a lot higher and the Chargers
can consider themselves lucky that he fell to them. He will fit in immediately as
a starting tackle on the left or right side of the line and will be tasked with
protecting QB Phillip Rivers and RB Ryan Matthews. He is a big boy so this shouldn’t
be a tough job for him take on. Look for this kid to have an instant impact on
next years Chargers squad…
Round 2
2.
R2 P6
– ILB Manti Teo Norte Dame – (Pick
Grade: B+): Now as much as Teo will
have an impact on this team. It won’t necessarily be on the field though. The
Chargers are going to need to find him a lot of help in the coming years. But
he is a great leader and that is where is impact will be felt the most. He will
be a good leader and a great example of how to carry yourself under stress and
how to be a true team player. Once they get him some help expect him to have a
great impact on this team…
Round 3
3. R3
P14 – WR Keenan Allen CAL – (Pick
Grade: B): Now Allen will take a little while to have impact he is coming
off of a major injury and will look to run as high as the Chargers #2 WR on the
team. He is tall and has great hands, he will be able to stretch the field
against most of the NFL’s starting CB from day one. But it will take a year or
2 before he becomes the great #1 WR that he is projected to be. But I still
believe even in his rookie season he will be important to the Chargersoffense…
