Double K’s Perspective: “San Francisco 49ers 2013 NFL Draft”…

Coming into this year’s draft the 49ers were in a position that a lot of teams would be envious of. They had just come off of a Super Bowl run. They were returning almost all of their offensive and defensive starters from the previous season. They added some important parts to replace what they lost (Boldin and Dorsey). And then there was the 13 draft picks that they had going into the draft. Well they ended up using 10 of those picks to try to fill out their roster and I think they did a pretty good job. In this post I am going to examine some of the players that they drafted that will have an instant impact on the 2013-14 San Francisco 49ers…

San Francisco 49ers draft recap: (NFL.com Grade: B, My Grade: A-) R1 S Eric Reid, LSU, R2 DE “Tank” Carradine, FSU, R2 TE Vance McDonald, Rice, R3 DE Corey Lemonier, AUB, R4 WR Quinton Patton LTU R4 RB Marcus Lattimore, SCA, R5 DE Quinton Dial, ALA, R6 OLB Nick Moody, FSU, R7 QB B.J.Daniels, SFU, R7 OT Carter Bykowski, ISU, R7 CB Marcus Cooper….

Round 1

1.       R1 P18 – S Eric Reid LSU – (Pick Grade: A): Reid is someone that may be able to step in and make an instant impact the reason for this is the fact that he won’t start immediately. But the good thing about it is that he doesn’t have to. He can come in and provide some rest periods for both Donte Whitner and Craig Dahl during the season keeping them fresh and allowing them to continue the strong play late into the game. He will be very valuable to the secondary late into the season…

Round 2

2.       R2 P8 – DE Cornelius “Tank” Carradine FSU – (Pick Grade: B): Another player that will not be making an instant impact as a starter. Even though there is a better chance of him breaking the starting lineup than the S Reid. He will enter camp having to only outperform former 1st rounder DT Glenn Dorsey and the fact that he can play at all 3 line positions. This is definitely a future starter and a player that can make sure that all of our current starters et solid rest and are ready for the playoffs…

3.       R2 P23 – TE Vance McDonald Rice – (Pick Grade: B): This was another smart pickup there are some experts that would compare McDonald to Vernon in the sense that he can stretch the field and he is a big tight end. He can look to replace Delanie Walker and get an instant chance to be on the field a lot as Harbaugh likes to run a lot of 2 tight end sets. So expect to see this kid make an impact in his rookie year by being a better run blacker and catching some important balls from Colin Kapernick…

Round 3

4.       R3 P26 – DE Corey Lemonier Auburn – (Pick Grade: B+): I think that this kid is a value pick for the 49ers as he adds more depth to a defensive line rotation that desperately needed it. He along with Carradine will look to be a part of the 49ers defensive line rotation. Another versatile player as he can play multiple spots on the line allowing Vic Faggio to get some rest for some of his veteran linemen. One again look for him to have a solid season in his  1st year and be a future starter for the 49ers…

Round 4

5.       R4 P31 – WR Quinton Patton Louis. Tech – (Pick Grade: B+): I didn’t really know how I felt about this pick….that is until a couple of days after the draft when I was reading a story on Bleacher Report and they are talking about the fact that after he found out he was drafted by the 49ers. He bought his own plane ticket to San Francisco and rented his own car and was on his way to the training facility to get to work training and learning the playbook. Something that could have cost him the right to participate in the 49ers rookie mini camp May 10th. Luckily Coach Harbaugh got to him before he broke any NFL rules and he will be a 49er…

6.       R4 P34 (CMP) – RB Marcus Lattimore South Carolina – (Pick Grade: A-): This is a great pick because the 49ers got an amazing and versatile player for basically nothing. They used a compensatory pick and it was an extra pick in the round. He is coming off a  major leg injury so he will have plenty of time to heal and get to 100% and he also has a future Hall of Famer in Frank Gore to learn from as Gore came into the league the same way drafted by the same team. So look for Lattimore to be starting in a few years when Frank retires. Until then all he has to do is rehab and then contribute when given the chance…
