This
week we are going to take a look at the “Bargain Basement” section of NFL Free
Agency. For those of you who don’t know what that is, It is when the Free Agent
market has had its big splash and all the major money contracts have been signed
and teams are starting to focus more on the draft than paying a aging veteran to
come in and help you team. So the Free Agents that are left all want to get
paid big money but at the end of the day they have to take a pay cut if they want
to play. You still have free agents like Dwight Freeney and John Abrahams,
Charles Woodson, ect… All of these guys are looking for a big payday, problem
with that is the fact that there aren’t any big paydays left on the market.
Lets take a look at the deals that were signed this week…
1.
Colts
sign former Raiders WR Darius Heyward- Bey to a 1yr $2.5M contract: In one
of the many Raider salary cap cuts was 1st Round pick Darius
Heyward-Bey. He went out and found himself a job and a young QB to grow with in
the same day. Last year Heyward –Bey was beginning to evolve into a good wide
out in Oakland’s offense. Now he will be taking a pay cut and passes from
Andrew Luck…
2.
Redskins
re-sign backup QB Rex Grossman to a 1yr $1M contract and CB DeAngelo Hall to a
1yr $1.25M contract: The Redskins took a reach into their past with their rookie
QB on the shelf and signed reliable backup Rex Grossman to a one million dollar
deal and former CB D.Hall to a 1yr deal to solidify their backfield and add some
veteran leadership to the team…
3.
Redskins
sign QB Pat White to a 1yr $500K contract: In a surprise move the Redskins
also signed former Dolphins QB Pat White who specialized in Special Teams and
also the wildcat. Many have said that they could see him in the same pistol and
power run type offenses that were made popular last season…
4.
Jaguars
sign former Browns WR Mohamed Massaquoi to a 2yr $4.7M contract: For a team
that needed a boost at the Wide Receivers they went out and got themselves some
quality talent at a discount price and we will see this versatile Wide out in a
Jaguars uniform next season. And possibly the next few years…
Now as for the local Bay Area teams they both once again had very slow
and quiet weeks. Most of the major moves made by the Raiders were releasing
former 1st round draft picks. The 49ers on the other hand answered
some much needed offseason questions and lined themselves up to have no true
draft needs going into this month’s draft. So lets take a look at both teams
moves…
49ers
1.
49ers
trade 2 draft picks (5th and 7th Rnd) to the Cleveland
Browns for QB Colt McCoy and 1 draft pick (6th Rnd): In another
move that made sense the 49ers went out and got themselves a back up QB and a
draft pick in return. Colt McCoy was never really what the Browns wanted at QB
and they expressed that as they deal him to San Francisco…
2.
49ers
sign former Eagles/Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomough to a 1yr $1.75M incentive laden
contract: In a move the 49ers needed to make they go out and get a veteran
cornerback. And he is familiar to the Bay Area as he spent most of his formative
years in Oakland but here is one thing Jim Harbaugh is a great evaluator of
talent and he and Vic Faggio know how to get guys that fit good in their system
and now Nnamdi is one of those guys…
3.
49ers
resign OT Anthony Davis to a 5yr $37.2M contract extension: The 49ers
really know how to keep their core together by giving them the money they
deserve and the next one is OT Anthony Davis who got his contract extension
this week…
Raiders
1.
Raiders
trade QB Carson Palmer to the Cardinals for a draft pick (6th Rnd),
Palmer then signs a new 2yr $16M contract with Arizona: In another move
that is a part of the “rebuilding” of the Raiders on and off the field as they
move on from Palmer and trade him to the Cardinals for draft picks…
2.
Raiders
trade 2 draft picks (5th in 2014 and cond. In 2015) to the Seahawks
for QB Matt Flynn: In other news the Raiders picked up another QB to compete
with Tyrell Pryor for the starting position and Flynn has a chip on his
shoulder after being beat out last year by Russell Wilson. So expect him to do
big things in the Silver and Black…
3.
Raiders
release OT J.Slowey and LB Rolando McClain in salary cap moves: In a couple
more moves just to not pay players the Raiders released OT Slowey and former 1st
Round pick Rolondo McLain and he will catch on somewhere but sorry to see him
go in OAK…
Well
that’s going to be it for now kids. We have covered the ups and downs of this
years free agency market. So next week we will have a little “best of” post
about some of the biggest pickups and stories from this FA period and
offseason. So be sure to come back next week to read my perspective on NFL free
agency in 2013…
