Double K’s Perspective: “NFL Free Agency Week #3…”

This was another week where the 49ers and Raiders were both a little of the radar. No big signings by either team but yet both were in the news for various reasons. But I digress this week we will begin with what was a pretty big week for some other teams in the NFL. Teams all across the NFL began thinning out the Free Agent market as they are picking up veteran players at bargain basement prices. Below are the top 5 Free Agent signings of Week 3 of the NFL Free Agent period…

1.       Falcons sign former Giants DE Osi Umenyiora to a 2yr $8.5M contract: This move made sense and with the developments of recent weeks it may end up being something that puts the Falcons over the top in their quest for a Super Bowl. As the Falcons look to maybe bring back DE John Abrahams to team with him it would make the Falcons pass rush one of the best in the NFL…
2.       Dolphins sign former Falcons CB Brent Grimes to a 1yr $5.5M contract: The Dolphins continued their upgrade this offseason adding a young Corner to their depth chart. They may be the surprise team of the year for the 2013 season. Although Grimes is coming off an injury he will be a solid addition to a Dolphins defense that was “middle of the road” last season in a competitive AFC East…
3.       Cowboys sign QB Tony Romo to a 6yr $108M contract extension: In what some would consider a weird move the Cowboys lock up their Franchise QB for another 6 years for $108M. The reason this is befuddling is because Romo isn’t coming off a strong season and has only 1 playoff win in his career. These aren’t numbers that normally get you a extension. But Jerry Jones wanted to secure him up for the next few years so he did just that…
4.       Ravens sign former Raiders S Michael Huff to a 3yr $6.0M contract:  After the loss of Ed Reed to the Texans the Ravens needed to find a veteran replacement. And even though Huff is no Ed Reed he will play hard and I think he will be successful in a Ravens defense that has a very imposing front 7 and can get the job done at the cornerback position. So keep an eye out for Huff to possibly blossom in the Ravens defense…
5.       Browns sign former Bears backup QB Jason Campbell to a 2yr $3.75M contract: In one of the many moves that the Browns have made this offseason this one is the most perplexing they already have 2 1st round QB’s on the roster what are the futures of Colt McCoy and Brandon Weeden with Campbell on the roster? Only time will tell…

Now the Raiders weren’t exactly busy in the Free Agent market but they did make one pickup and they also put themselves in line for some major moves in upcoming weeks. As for the 49ers they are still in talks for another corner but I have a suspicion that other than that we may have to wait for the draft for the 49ers to make any more noise…

A.      Raiders sign OT Alex Barron to a 5yr $9.2M contract: This was a huge pickup for the Raiders they needed offensive line help and the journeymen Tackle Barron could be the answer. He has been solid and consistent in recent years and could help solidify that oline for whoever the Raiders have at QB next season…
B.      Raiders are in line to deal QB Carson Palmer to the Arizona Cardinals: The Raiders and QB Carson Palmer could not come to a agreement on a restructured contract so it looks like the Raiders may be looking to move him to the desert in Arizona. There are talks this deal may be done by next week. Who know what’s going on in Oakland but they have an idea of what they want to do just keep reading…
C.      Raiders are in line to trade for Seahawks backup QB Matt Flynn: After failing to restructure with veteran QB Carson Palmer the Raiders started to aggressively looking for another QB.  And they may have found their answer in Seahawks backup QB Matt Flynn and the Raiders are in talks to bring him to the Silver and Black…

This week was a little slow on the west coast as far as free agency is concerned. But all are still making a concerted effort to get better and I tell you this if or when some of these moves are complete the NFC West will officially become the toughest division to play in, in all of football. But we will have to see as we march on into the spring and look forward to the NFL draft on April 25-27…
