Double K’s Greatest Games Never Played: 02’ San Francisco 49ers vs. 02’ Oakland Raiders in the Super Bowl…
Game #10 – 02’ San
Francisco 49ers vs. 02’ Oakland Raiders
02’ San Francisco
49ers (W/L: 10-6 (1st NFCW), Finish: Lost in Divisional Round to TB
31-6, HC: Steve Marriucci): In what was the final year that the 49ers were
relevant in the playoff hunt. This is a year with a team that was poised to
explode, led by former arena league QB Jeff Garcia and former star RB Garrison
Hearst and emerging diva WR Terrell Owens and they came into the playoffs
playing hot and managed to make a 25 point deficit disappear in a game against
the Giants. They came into Tampa Bay expecting to perform well and potentially
get back to another NFC Championship game. But Tampa had other ideas as they
got beat up bad in the confines of Raymond James stadium. The final score was 31-6 but let’s say that
the 49ers made it past TB and through the championship game and back to their 6th
SB…
Game #10 – 02’ San
Francisco 49ers vs. 02’ Oakland Raiders
02’ Oakland Raiders (W/L:
11-5 (1st AFCW), Finish: Lost to TB in SB 37 48-21, HC: Bill
Callahan): The Raiders on the other hand were solid and actually reached
the Super Bowl in Jan of 03’ Only to be destroyed by the same team that beat up
the 49ers in the Buccaneers. They were led by former Raiders HC John Gruden and
there is still speculation that Callahan allowed the Raiders to be beat. By not
changing the offensive or defensive game plan going into SB 37 the Buc’s were
able to know what was coming and do what it took to stop it. But in our
universe they didn’t face the Buc’s they faced the 49ers and the result was a
little bit different…
Synopsis: Raiders 28,
49ers 21: In this universe the 49ers and Raiders met in SB 37 and the
result was a little bit different. As much as love the 49ers and wish that this
is would have been number six for them. But alas the Raiders of this year were
really good a reinvigorated Rich Gannon and the amazing HOF WR team of Jerry
Rice and Tim Brown backed up by talented RB Charlie Garner. The combination of
this and possibly one of the best NFL backfields (Woodson, Woodson and
Buchanon). I just think that the 49ers offense would have been suffocated by a
much stronger Raiders defense and though they would be competitive the 49ers
would end up taking their 1st SB loss to their cross-town rivals…
