#1 Former 49ers
GM/Owner Eddie DeBartalo (1977-2000 (23yrs), SBT: 5, CHMP: 5, REC: 232-141-1): This
man has been an idol of mine since I was a child. Eddie D. was known for being
an outgoing and kindhearted man. Every major icon of the 49ers era under him
gave him credit and said that they loved playing for him. He is the man that brought us Bill Walsh a
Head Coach that set a standard in the NFL and a Head Coaching tree that is
still seen in the NFL today… But through Bill he brought us Joe and Jerry and
Rodger and John and Jessie (every 49ers fan over 30 know exactly who they
are!!). And almost a 20 year run where the 49ers were at least a 10 win team
even if they didn’t make the playoffs they still won at least 10 games every
year and competed. Eddie got in some trouble in the early 2000’s and lost his
ownership of the 49ers and though it remains in the family Eddie D is now a
hall of famer and will always be fondly remembered by 49ers fans and people in
the Bay Area for years to come. That makes him my #1 Bay Area Sports Icon….
