With
us now 7 days away from free agency beginning we are really starting to see
things shaping up. You had the Mike Wallace end up landing in Miami with Ryan
Tannahill. Reggie Bush landed in Detroit to help them out with a depleted
running game. Wes welker had games played with him before landing with another
hall of fame QB Payton Manning in Denver. Only to be promptly replaced by Danny
Amendola only hours after his departure. And that was only in the 1st
3-4 days of free agency. Now the 49ers weren’t exactly big players as they
didn’t have much to work with under the cap but here are the moves that they
made…
A.
Buccaneers
sign S Dashon Goldson to 5yr/35M contract: This was a huge hit for the
49ers they lost possibly the best up and coming safety in football today. But
at the end of the day the 49ers just couldn’t afford to keep Dashon in the fold
and he wasn’t going to take a pay cut to win a title this early in his career.
So off to Tampa Bay he goes…
B.
49ers
sign DT Glen Dorsey to 2yr contract: Now when this signing was first
announced I asked myself who Glen Dorsey was. After some research on Google I figured
out that the 49ers got a pretty suitable replacement for Issac Sopoaga who ran
away to Philly. Dorsey should make a decent run stopper and with the talent he
has around him should be more productive than in previous years…
C.
49ers
sign special teams ace LB Dan Skuta from Cincinnati: After losing
Rockwright last year the 49ers needed another special teams ace to get things
done on kickoffs and serve as a backup LB when needed. They killed 2 birds with
one stone by signing Skuta from the Bengals and he should fit right in and be
able to give a solid impact on returners all season long…
D.
Titans
sign TE Delanie Walker from 49ers: Another huge loss for the 49ers as
Walker was one of the most versatile offensive players in the NFL. He could
play in the slot he could block and he was a great tight end. The Titans are
getting someone who will have an instant impact for them the way he did in San
Francisco for years. The Titans gain was the 49ers loss….
The Raiders on the other hand had a lot of free agents hitting the open
market last Tuesday. But some of the moves that they made to get under the cap
were just plain baffling to me. To release DHB who had been a contributor the
past couple of seasons since being paired with QB Carson Palmer. They also released DB Michael Huff. A kid who
was coming into his own after a couple of bad seasons to start his career, But
Reggie McKenzie has a vision for this team and we are going ot have to wait and
see what he has in store…
A.
Raiders
cut WR Darius Heyward-Bey and DB Michael Huff: This was a move that baffled
a lot of people. But the bottom line was that these two were making way more
than what they were worth. So in this day where we only saw a 3M dollar increase
to the Salary Cap the Raiders just didn’t have enough to keep them both maybe
they can resign them at a discounted rate…
B.
Raiders
sign LB Kevin Burnett (Dolphins) and LB Nick Roach (Bears): The Raiders
seemed to be making a run on linebackers this offseason. But these two are the
most important because they will be making a pretty big impact from day one.
Both LB’s should get a shot at starting and with Curry and McClain the Raiders
should be pretty stocked in 2013…
C.
Browns
sign DT Desmond Bryant from Raiders: Bryant wasn’t exactly the highest
impact player in the Raiders last year but he was pretty good. The loss of him
with virtually no replacement will mean problems stopping the run unless the
Raiders draft a DT with the #3 spot in the draft. This will just be one of many
needs this offseason for the Raiders…
D.
Jets
sign RB Mike Goodson from Raiders: Goodson wasn’t exactly a huge loss for
the Raiders considering the fact that they still have McFadden on the roster.
But Goodson was a great replacement during D-Mac’s injury downtime. So the
Raiders will have one less security blanket if McFadden doesn’t end up lasting
all season. But lets just hope that it doesn’t go down that way…
I think that both teams have started making some small strides to make
their teams better than they were last year. But the Raiders may find
themselves in a rebuilding process as they seemed to lose a lot of their depth
in this free agency period. They will most likely lose more than they gain in
this free agency period. But its good to keep an eye on them this offseason.
The 49ers are looking good as it looks as if they may sign star DB Nnamdi
Asumougha but we will have to wait on that one now wont we…
