Double K’s Perspective: “NFL Free Agency Week #2… The Rest…”

We are now in Week 3 of Free Agency and as I look back at week 2 , there wasn’t much movement in the Bay Area with the 2 teams (Oakland and San Fran.). But around the rest of the NFL there was a lot of movement. Some big names resigned with their teams from last year. And some more big names made their way to new places so we are going to discuss them 1st. Lets start in New England…

A.      Patriots resign OT S.Vollmer to a 4yr $27M contract: This was a big signing for the Patriots they needed to make sure that they kept their offensive line intact and made sure that their golden boy Tom Brady is protected for the final years of his career…
B.      Ravens sign DE E.Dumerville to a 5yr $35M contract: With the loss of Ray Lewis (retirement) and Ed Reed (Texans) the Ravens needed to get back some of their defensive prowess. Dumerville brings exactly that he bring back alittle bit of that punch to a Ravens team that has a rough road to try to repeat as Super Bowl champs…
C.      Raiders sign DT V.Walker to a 1yr $2M contract: The Raiders sign Walker to add to the list of value priced veterans they have been adding to their roster this offseason. The defense will be better next year because GM Reggie McKenzie has retooled it and made it salary cap friendly…
D.      Texans sign S Ed Reed to a 3yr $15M contract: This signing made a lot of sense for everyone involved the Ravens were having a mad exodus and Reed wasn’t going back to the same defense that just won the Super Bowl. But in Houston he has the ability to add to what was already one of the best defenses in the NFL and possibly get back to the playoffs and possibly a Super Bowl but who knows?...
E.       Bengals resign LB R.Maualuga to a 2yr $6.5M contract: This one was interesting to me because the former USC grad has been on my radar for years and I was hoping he would make his way back to the West Coast with any of the 3 California teams (49ers,Raiders,Chargers) all had a need at LB position that could have been filled by this beast but alas he stays in Cincinnati and looks to help them compete…

Now as for the Raiders and 49ers I mentioned the Raiders signing of DT V.Walker but other than that there wasn’t much movement for the local teams. But there were a couple of other storylines that were intriguing during this pass week. Those stories are mentioned below…

1.       Raiders are set to release QB Palmer and DT Kelly for salary cap relief: Most of the moves made by  the Raiders front office have been to help them in the future. So look at these to moves as the same. The Raiders may have to let go of their franchise QB and their stallworth defensive lineman. But Kelly is gone already and it looks like Palmer may be on his way out the door. But who knows both of these moves may help them in the future…
2.       49ers still interested in signing FA CB Nnamdi Asamuah: The 49ers are one piece away on defense from being rock solid. And Nnamdi could be that piece. He is a press corner who could do wonders to eliminate the opposing defenses best receiver. There are some that think that he is past his prime. But I think in the right system he could be back to his old Pro Bowl form. And that system…that city is San Francisco….

With these moves both the 49ers and Raiders are looking to build on their success from last year and get rid of their flaws. And in that vein both teams are having great offseasons despite not making a big splash in Free Agency. But always remember the 49ers have 15 draft picks in the upcoming draft and the Raiders have the #3 pick in the 1st round so both can still make a splash in the draft. So till next week my friends class is dismissed…
