Now
I take you back to about 7-9 weeks into the NFL season. The 49ers were 6-1 and
looking to be on a roll. A roll that everyone thought would eventually lead to
the Super Bowl. Head Coach Jim Harbaugh had revived the career of #1 pick QB
Alex Smith, He had made him relevant and playing on a championship caliber
team. Then came the concussion the hit that changed everything. Alex Smith went
down after that hit and didn't return for that game or any other as phenom QB
Colin Kapernick took over the 49ers starting QB job and never looked back. But
what of Alex Smith the young man that struggled thru multiple offensive
coordinators and Head Coaches during his career. Even though Alex was having a
great season at the point of his (23-25, 350+yrds and 3 TD’s) injury. The 49ers
needed the spark provided by Colin was what the 49ers needed to carry them into
the post season and into the Super Bowl. But Alex cant really become the
highest paid clipboard holder in the NFL so odds are the 49ers will be
releasing him or at least trying to trade him away….
With
both of those options on the table today I am going to look at releasing him.
Now this option is best because if Alex truly wants to be a 49er then he can
prove that by signing another contract with the team at a discounted rate and
as a backup. A solid backup but a backup none the less. Now if he chooses not to return to San
Francisco (which I wouldn't blame him by the way still think he was robbed!!),
he dose indeed have options. A team like the Vikings has a young QB who could
feasibly lose his starting job to a smart veteran like Smith. I look at the
Kansas City Chiefs who don’t really have a QB on the roster who is better than
Alex. But my biggest fear is the fact that there is a team within our own
division that is sin desperate need of a QB and currently has no one on their roster
that is a better QB than Alex Smith. That team is the Arizona Cardinals…I don’t
think I can even name a QB on their roster. So even though it’s the best fit
for him I don’t want to see Alex donning a Cardinals helmet anytime in the near
future. For now though Alex is still a 49er…
