2013 San Diego Padres
Pitching (SP: C+, BP:
C, #1 SP: Edison Volquez, CLR: H.Street): Now this is half of what the
Padres will struggle with over the next few years as they rebuild. They have a
good anchor in Volquez and added some
depth when they added Marquis but I don’t know if that will be enough for them
to contend…
Offense (SL: C, BNCH:
C-): The offense is the other half of that equation. Can the bats that they
have be competitive in a division that is dominated by pitching? They don’t
exactly have a murderer’s row of homerun hitters in their lineup. When your
biggest threat is Carlos Quentin you have some issues to take care of…
Defense (C: B-, INF:
B, OF: B-): Now on defense this team does have a pretty good squad. Cabrera
,Quentin and Maybin are all stout defensively. And should make it difficult for
opposing hitters to get a lot of easy hits. But I don’t know if they will be
able to keep them afloat in a tough NL West but overall this is the strongest
part of a very weak team in the NL this year…
Season Outlook: As
far as the overall product the Padres are a decent team. But they are not good
enough to really compete in a tough division. But I will tell you this…this
team is good enough to play spoiler if they manage to put it all together at
some point in the season. All it would take is a series win here or there to
spoil a Wild Card chance or the division title hopes of the Dodgers or the
Giants. But will they be competing for a World Series anytime soon? Maybe in a
new Disney movie but not in the real life Sorry Padres fans…
