Well
folks this is the point in which we cover the second of the thee parts that I promised
you. In this part of my year in review. This
week we talk about the path that the Oakland Athletics took to their 1st
post season birth in a couple of years. While the Giants sat In the National
League dominating a division of teams that seemed to be having below
expectation seasons. So I would consider their path to the postseason to be a
little bit easier than that of their cross town brethren. The Athletics were
the stepchild of the AL West with now 2 powerhouse teams in the Angels (Pujols
and Wilson) and the Rangers (Hamilton and Co.). They were picked to finish last
by most baseball experts. But as the season moved on the Athletics began to
rack up win after win and they climbed themselves right into the thick of the
AL West race….
In
the mist of a great baseball season the Kings and the Sharks seemed to be
headed in opposite directions. The Sharks seemed to be moving that much closer
to the goal that has eluded them for the past couple of years. The Stanley Cup…
But the season ended and the Sharks were the 7 seed and the Kings were the 8
seed. The Sharks had struggled all
season and looked to have finally put it together for what looked like a
playoff run. The kings on the other hand had lead the division for most of the
season and seemed to be on a slide coming into the playoffs. But as the
postseason started fortunes seemed to be reversed and the Kings pulled off a
4-1 upset of the #1 Canucks and then a 4-0 sweep of the #2 Blues (Who knocked
out the Sharks 4-1 in Round 1), then finished off the Western Conference
beating the Coyotes 4-1 to be the 1st 8 seed to reach the Stanley
Cup Finals. The Kings managed to keep the roll going by winning their 1st
Stanley Cup title leading into a lockout that would last into the new year…
The
Athletics were continuing their climb as the Giants coasted to another division
title. The AL West came down to the
final series of the season. The Texas Rangers versus the Oakland Athletics in
Oakland to decide who would be a Wild Card team and who would be the Division
winner and advance to the second round. And after 4 agonizing games and
multiple comeback victories the Athletics shocked the world and beat the
Rangers to advance to the postseason as division champions. Then came the
opening round and the eventual AL Champion Detroit Tigers. The Tigers took the
Athletics to 5 games and pulled it out. While in the NL the Giants were facing
off in the 1st of 2 straight elimination game victories. That would
propel them to the World Series against those very Tigers where the Giants
proceeded to sweep them and win their 2nd World Series in the Past 3
season. Can they repeat only 2013 wil tell. Comeback next week for the final
installment of the A year in Review we bring the memories up to date here in
the Classroom…
