I
am going to begin this perspective by admitting that I don’t know much about
the initial story that this “situation” is about. So I will tell you what I do
know. There was a girl and a boy. The girl is Lennay Kekua a young woman that
we may never know if she ever even existed. The boy being all American Norte
Dame LB Manti Te’o a young man who over the course of the 2012 season made
America fall in love with his heartbreaking story. The story went like this he
and Ms.Kekua had a “online” relationship/friendship for over 3 year period of
time. During this time they never met in person they only communicated via telephone
or instant messaging. Sometime late last year this young lady was believed to
be in the hospital after a car accident. And soon after that she was diagnosed
with leukemia. This sparked a love affair between the two in which they became
very close over the course of a 4 month period of time. Once again never having
actually came into contact with each other but over the phone and via text and
instant messaging….
Now
we come to the fateful day of September 11th 2012… on this day as Te’o
was dealing with some very real emotions of his dear grandmother dying. He received
the news that the girl who he was falling in love with had lost her fight with
leukemia and had passed away as well. Te’o would use these emotions to play out
of his mind and pull himself right into the Heisman talk by the end of the
season. On December 6th Te’o received a call that would change his
life he would find out the the girl he thought he had carried on this loving
relationship with, the very same girl that he thought had passed away had never
really existed and that he was about to be exposed. So according to the media
he went to his coach and other Norte Dames officials and they all made the
decision to keep it under wraps until after the National Title game. No need to
blow the story before it is necessary…
I
am going to leave the facts of the story at that. This paragraph is going to be
about my opinion about this whole “situation”. I will start by saying that I would
be buying the fact that he had nothing to do with it. If there were not a
couple of holes the size of mack trucks going threw the story. I can believe
that he had a phone relationship with this young lady I have participated in a
couple of these myself. But for 3 years and without any actual face to face
contact. That is hard to believe that is the case. Also he claims to have lied
to his parents about having met the young girl a couple of different times. Why
do this if you are being fooled unknowingly. He kept the entire relationship a
little too close to the vest for my taste. I don’t believe that he perpetrated the
hoax by himself. But the holes I mentioned plus a couple more I didn’t get to
talk about are why I think we haven’t heard the last of this “situation” and
Manti’s hands aren’t as clean as he would like us to believe. But until I can
get a hold of proof this is all speculation for now…
