First and foremost welcome back to the Classroom. If you
read one of my previous post than you know that Mike D’Antoni received the coveted
job of Head Coach of th Los Angeles Lakers. And after about a week of only
coaching them in practice he took to the sidelines and began to run his offense
without his star point guard (Steve Nash). But even without him the Lakers have
had some ups and downs in D’Antoni’s system. But overall it hasent amounted to
what we all thought it would. That would be a team that scores and plays very
little defense. But would still manage to do enough to win the game because
they just have too many weapons, Bryant, Howard, Meeks…Gasol? Wait Pau actually
took a couple of games to get used to the new system and find his place. And
truth be told we will have to wait and see where Pau fits into the system at
all. But our resident shooter Kobe Bryant is sure putting up his fair share of
shots. The surprise of the season has been Jodie Meeks making the most of his
minuets on the floor in this fast paced offense where he can take a lot of good
shots often.
On the defensive end there are a lot of surprises. The #1 defensive player in the NBA the past 2
years is playing like he forgot how to play that part of the game. And Mr
Bryant has been one of the better defenders in the NBA in past season and just isn’t
doing it as well as needed to do well in this new offensive scheme. This is the
area that the Lakers are going to need to improve if the plan on making a run
at the playoffs. Because we have seen many years in the past that D’Antoni’s
offense can get you to the playoffs it can even get you to a conference title
series but it cant get you to a finals and hasn’t yet won a NBA Title. So this
will be the ultimate test the Lakers will be getting Point Guard Steve Nash
back from injury. If they are still losing games after he gets back in the
starting lineup then the problem is the system and the coach not the players.
So remember that if the Lakers are watching the playoffs from the couch instead
of the bench…
