This was a game that the 49ers were going to dominate. They
were supposed to come into their own house and dominate the lowly Rams at home.
After the game Alex Smith had against the Cardinals we were all thinking the
same thing. This is going to be a blowout!!! But all of that was debunked as
Alex went down early and left the offense to backup Colin Kapernick. Kapernick
struggled early but looked good doing so, Frank Gore was his usual self racking
up 100 yards. But he was even stymied early as most of those yards came late in
the 4th quarter comeback. On the other side of the ball the Rams
made the 49ers defense look like the pre-Harbaugh years with the Rams moving
the ball at will against the 49ers defense. Once again all of this was true until
late in the 4th when things changed and the 49ers turned it around. But
in the end it wasn't enough for either team as they ended in the 1st
tie in the NFL since 2008 (PHI/CIN)….
Game #9 – St.Louis
Rams at San Francisco 49ers
Offense: B (A.Smith
7/8, 72yrds 1TD, F.Gore 21/97yrds 1TD, M.Crabtree 5/70yrds 1TD): The
offense started out really nonexistent. Alex Smith started the game 7/8 before
the concussion put him out for the rest of the game. After that injury the
offense stalled couldn’t seem to produce points and initially struggled moving
the ball. Then sometime in the late 3rd quarter the offense woke up
and all of a sudden started putting points up on the board. It looked like they
had a different team comeout and put on the pads. As the 49ers scored 10 points
to the Rams 7 in the 2nd half and that sent up into overtime. In overtime
both kickers looked as if they couldn’t hit the broad sign of a barn. So the
game resulted in a tie. Because neither offense could get it done in the extra
period of football…
Defense: B- (Passing
Yrds All. 299yrds, Rushing Yrds All. 159yrds, 1TO): The defense gave up a
lot of yards but I would still call this one of their better performances.
Because at the end of the day it is about how many points you give up that not
yards that determine whether or not you win right? The 49ers defense just like
the offense seemed to not remember how to play until late in the game. They
only forced one turnover but it was a huge turnover late in the game. The 49ers
forced and recovered a fumble late in the 3rd quarter that helped
turn the momentum back in the favor of the 49ers when they needed it. Unfortunately
they were not able to capitalize on that momentum to do anything other than tie
the game and miss a FG or 2. So although the numbers don’t say it the defense
played well on Sunday, but still have a lot to work on before the matchup
against the Bears if they plan to win on Monday night…
Final Score: 49ers
24, Rams 24 F/OT
Overall:B
