Double K’s Perspective: The “QB Controversy” in San Fran…

If you had asked me 3 weeks ago if the 49ers had a QB controversy I would have laughed at you. I would have said” Alex Smith has lead us to a NFC Championship game, He has been a top 5 QB most of this year!” “Colin Kapernick will have his opportunity but just not now.” Then came the fateful tie game against the Rams when Alex gets knocked out with a concussion and in comes Kapernick. A kid who has been a backup for the past 2 seasons, but anyone who watched him in college knew that he brings something different to the table. A whole new skill set different than Alex’s, Colin came in and lit up a Bears defense that up until that game was considered the best in the NFL. Then there was a week of complete and utter madness as Harbaugh played games with the media and fans by not announcing who the starter was going to be until game day. But then he started the kid again and Alex was ready to play, here is the kicker the young buck played well again going for 2 TD’s (1 pass 1 rush). But he did throw his 1st pick…

Now all the nay sayers and Alex Smith haters want to take their moment to say see I told you so. There are calls from the fan base to start Kapernick for the rest of the season. I see a problem with that on the level that it makes me ask. What will that do to Alex Smith psyche? Will he even want to be a 49er next year if he knows he is going to sit on the bench and not start. This man doesn’t think so and most of the interviews that I have seen back up the point. That Alex may take this laying down but he won’t be happy about it and he and the team are aware that he can be cut by a certain date next season without it costing against the cap. But here is the deal and Harbaugh even said it himself. Alex has done NOTHING to deserve to be demoted from his starting position for the 49ers. Most say that doesn’t matter Colin is better and gives us a better chance to win. I think both QB’s give us a chance to win one (Smith) just in different ways than the other(Kapernick). Here is the deal though folks we got to this point with Alex so why not continue to roll with him and if he struggles and we need someone to come in and save the day, or god forbid Alex gets hurt again. Then we know now that we have a backup that can get on the field and get it done. Then maybe next year the 49ers part ways with Alex Smith and give the reigns to the 2nd round pick out of Nevada Colin Kapernick. That is a plan that works out best for every one. Till next week my friends…Class is dismissed.
