Double K’s Perspective: “The Phil Jackson/Mike D’Antoni” situation…

Ok so after a week has passed since the Lakers fired Mike Brown and hired Phil… oh you mean they didn’t hire back the guru of the triangle offense and 11 time NBA champion Phil Jackson? No… Who did they hire?.... Mike D’Antoni??? The guy that got fired from the superstar loaded New York Knicks because he couldn’t seem to put it together. The same D’Antoni that had Carmelo and Amare and couldn’t make it work well enough to become a true contender in the east? Wow that surprises me… I for sure would have thought that they would hire Phil Jackson I know most of the sports world was as surprised as I when the announcement came down that it was Mike that got the job not Phil. Heck I think even Phil thought he had the job and was getting ready to and coach the Lakers and was dreaming of ways to utilize all the talent on that roster.

Then he got the phone call. “Phil we decided to go in a different direction!” Now I don’t know if that was exactly what was said but I assume it went something like that. Personally I would have never made that call I think Phil was the perfect man for the job. It would be the same as almost every other star studded team that he has coached. Phil Jackson was the biggest ego manager that I have ever seen in my life. He made a team with Jordan, Pippin and Rodman work to win a title. He took a team lead by Payton, Bryant, Malone and ONeal and they got along well enough to get to the NBA Finals. But they lost…even with the zen master they lost. But as much as Phil is 70 years old I still think he was a better candidate than Mike D’Antoni. Now I am not here to put down D’Antoni he is a offensive genius (at least according to Kobe Bryant) and the man did have a lot of success the last time he was paired with Steve Nash and a good big man (Howard or Gasol take your pick) he was winning 60 games a year at that point. So here is the kicker…. Under the new Laker front office regime the thing that made Mike D’Amtoni the better candidate than Phil Jackson for the job?....... He wasn't Phil Jackson!
