Double K’s Perspective: The Media’s role in sports today…

Welcome back to the class room students and today we are going to get a little perspective on the sports world. What I mean by this Is we need to start understanding something. In today’s world of Twitter and Face book, MySpace and Tout. There are more ways to interact with sports stars and ways to get that message out to as many fans as possible. I will use the situation in Los Angeles as a starter. They started this offseason wondering what they had to look forward too. Andrew Bynum  was finally coming into his own. Kobe Bryant only had a couple of years left and wanted another ring. The Lakers fought hard last season against OKC but couldn’t come out the victor. Then the offseason came and the amazing Dwight Howard trade and the new hope for the new season. Mike Brown had all the pieces necessary as the Lakers also went out and got him Steve Nash. They found Brown some depth as they signed Jodie Meeks and Antwaun Jamison. They got him a championship caliber team and expected championship caliber results…

The season did not yield that level of results. The Lakers started the season 1-4, looking lost out there at times. And an atmosphere that was extremely negative and didn’t seem to be getting any better. As the media began to really pay attention to the Lakers and began to doubt a lot of the moves that had been made so far this offseason. The ownership was now being held accountable and talked about. This did not make the Lakers happy. And even though the management had said plenty of times to  give it time and that the team just had to get used to Mike Browns “Princeton offense”. The pressure was beginning to mount and the media was beginning to wonder if the Lakers were going to do anything about it. (Mind you still only 5 games into a 82 game season). So the Lakers decided to do something about it…. They fired Mike Brown…after only 5 games. They fired Mike Brown and let the whole thing fall on his shoulders. When the problem was with the mismatched pieces that they put together on the arena floor. But that’s ok because thanks to the media the “zen master” himself was ready to get up off his death bed and come back to coach this team of all stars. Every media outlet was covering it the media was all about Phil coming back to LaLa land. But then the team throws a curveball out there in the form of hiring former Knicks and Suns head coach Mike D’antoni. This step outside the bounds of what this column  is about I think was still persuaded by the media and the fans calling for a better use of new point guard Steve Nash. But overall you can get the gist of what I am saying. The media has a bigger foothold in what goes on in sports than we would like to admit. Don’t believe me see BCS Playoffs circa 2014…
