If you have been reading the blog recently or listening to
the show on Sunday’s. Then you should know what this debate is about. My
esteemed colleague Dirk Suave insist that a machine or the current K-Zone that
is used by almost any TV network that shows a baseball game during the 162 game
season. To make a long story short they would just wire the umpires mask with a
couple of led lights that would trigger after the pitch is thru the K-Zone and
let the umpire know weather to call ball or strike. Thus eliminating the “human
error” from the game of baseball. This is where we disagree last week I presented
an in depth look at that view. This week is my solution to this question…
Improvement through
training and education: Now instead
of sitting here and trying to convince you that the other idea was wrong. Im
going to start out by saying as much as I disagree with the other argument. My
reasoning behind this is that I just dont think that it is financially feasible
to enact such a plan throughout all of baseball. A much cheaper and feasible option
would be to utilize the K-Zone technology as a training tool to educate the
Umpires to be able to call a more consistent game. We may never get to a point
were the ump’s call the same game no matter who is behind home plate. But if we
utilize the K-Zone to their advantage by studying the tapes with the K-Zone
included on the screen so they can see exactly how far off some of their calls
were and tighten up their zone. I think that this is the most effective way to
end things like ace pitchers like Verlander who have strike zones that are 2ft
wider than most. But baseball will do what it wants and fans will have to like
it but hopefully someone from baseball will read this and decide on a way to
deal with this issue and fix baseball. Until that happens… Class is Dismissed…
