Today class we are going to put a little perspective on the
AL West division title race. As the season began the Texas Rangers were the
defending division champs as well as the defending AL champs. Having gone to
the World Series and returning much of the same lineup the Rangers were the definite
favorite to win the AL West. Well here we were at 162 and the Rangers are tied
with the Oakland Athletics for the division title. It came down to one game…Both
teams had clinched their playoff spots earlier in the series. Only thing left
to decide was the AL West title. And it was decided in dramatic fashion in
Oakland,CA…
Oakland Athletics
(94-68) 12, Texas Rangers (93-69) 5 : The Rangers and the Athletics came
into this game tied for the AL West lead at 93-68 each. And they faced off in a
day game at the Oakland Coliseum. Everyone including myself felt as if Texas
would be able to pull this off and fend off the pesky Athletics. And early on
it looked as if that was true. With the Rangers taking a early 5-1 lead in the
3rd. I had to change the channel multiple time thru the next couple
of innings. Then the bottom of the 4th came around and I watched my
hometown team put up a 6 spot in the bottom of the 4th inning. After
that it seemed to be Oakland’s game to lose and they were not going to let go.
You could see the emotion and the relief in the young Athletics as they took
down the monster 2 time division champion Texas Rangers and they did it in
dramatic fashion at home. The kind of thing that Disney movies are made of and
we in the bay cant wait to see if the Athletics can make a run similar to the
Giants of 2010 and get back to the promise land of the World Series…
