Double K’s Perspective: 7 No Hitters this season…

This season was something of an anomaly. There were teams that you didn’t think would make the postseason that are in. You had trades that just defied logic happening left and right. But overall for the 1st time in 15+ years there were 7 No-Hitters/Perfect Games this season. In this post we are going to talk a little about each one of these games. For now we are going to start at the beginning…

04/21/12 – Phillip Humber (CHW), Opp: SEA, Score: 4-0 (Perfect Game) (19): This perfect game happened very early in the season. And because of that a lot of Fantasy Baseball owners were extremely disappointed. As they all went out and picked up Humber thinking he was in line to have a magical season and he pretty much landed flat on his face. He finished 5-5 and in the bullpen as the White Sox fell flat on their face in the race for their own division’s title…

05/02/12 – Jared Weaver (LAA), Opp: MIN, Score: 9-0: Jared Weaver had the game of his life that day in early May. Going up against a Minnesota lineup that didn’t quite have it together yet. But Weaver looked as he has looked all season long…dominant. He set down the Twins batters and allowed no hits to cement his legacy as one of the greatest pitchers of our generation…

06/01/12 – Johan Santana (NYM), Opp: STL, Score: 8-0: The most impressive thing about this game was that some people earlier in the season wondered if Johan Santana was ever going to be able to get back to his Cy-Young contender form from a couple of years ago. On this night he did as he threw over 140 pitches (that pretty much ended his season by the way) and he managed to hold the potent Cardinals lineup to no hits. Johan put himself on the map that day right before he fell off…

06/08/12 – Mariners Pitchers (6), Opp: LAD, Score: 1-0: This was an unusual no hitter. But a no hitter none the less. It took 6 Mariners to hold off the Dodgers in this interleague matchup. The game started out with Kevin Millwood dominating the Dodgers lineup and looking very sharp doing it. Then came the injury Millwood gets hurt. That’s when the Mariners bullpen stepped up and shutdown the Dodgers and completed the no hitter. Of the 200+ no hitters/perfect games in MLB history. There aren’t many that are combined and the pitching staff in Seattle pulled it off that night in early june…

06/13/12 – Matt Cain (SF), Opp: HOU, Score: 10-0 (Perfect Game)(20): Now this one did not come as a surprise necessarily. As much as Tim Lincicum is the ace of the staff (even though he didn’t pitch like it till late in the season).Matt Cain has been the work horse for the Giants. Rarely getting hurt and always reliable to give you a quality start and keep your tem in the game. On this night the Giants jumped out to an early lead and Cain settled into a groove. I was at work watching it on a big screen. I looked up and noticed it was the 8th inning and he hadn’t givin up a hit. I began to wonder if it was a perfect, asking random fans as I worked. I was able to slow down enough to watch the final out and history was made. The 1st ever perfect game in Giants history,…

08/15/12 – Felix Hernandez (SEA), Opp: TB, Score: 1-0 (Perfect Game)(21):  This was something that very few didn’t see coming. The only thing that was a surprise was who he did it against. The Tampa Bay Rays, a team that was streaking and looking to challenge for a Wild Card spot. Felix looked sharp in his performance and I was impressed. Felix is a dominant force almost every day he steps out on the mound. But on this day he looked absolutely perfect…

09/28/12 – Homer Bailey (CIN), Opp: PIT, Score: 1-0: The Reds are a team that has pretty much already solidified their spot in the playoffs. But that didn’t matter to Homer Bailey on this day in Pittsburgh. He made the new look Pirates who had made a charge at a Wild Card spot. Look like a bunch of confused kids. Bailey was only a error away from the 24th Perfect Game in MLB history. But he will settle for the 230+ no hitter in MLB history. I guess that will have to do…. Class is dismissed…
