2012 World Series: Detroit Tigers (88-74) vs. San Francisco Giants (94-68)…

This was a series that was thought to be a good one. Both teams were on these magical runs that lead them to this point. The Tigers had beaten the streaking Athletics in a 5 game series. Then proceeded to sweep the Evil Empire (Yankees) in a 4 game sweep that would have impressed even the most casual of fans. The Giants on the other hand struggled their way to the series going down 0-2 in the NLDS to the Reds. And 3-1 in the NLCS against the defending champion Cardinals. After battling back twice just to get there no one thought the Giants would have anything left to take on Justin Verlander (Best pitcher in baseball)and the daunting Tigers lineup including the Triple Crown Winner Miguel Cabrera. Boy were we wrong!!...

2012 World Series – San Francisco Giants (4), Detroit Tigers (0)

Batting: DET C-/SF B+: The Giants bats came alive in this series…Well actually one game prior to this series. In the final game of the NLDS the Giants put up 8 runs on the Cardinals. This was thought to be a much tougher task against the Best pitcher in baseball. But in game one the Kung Fu Panda lit up Verlander for 2 HR’s and hit the Tigers bullpen for another and they were off to the races as the Giants were able to put up runs against all of the Tigers starters. The Tigers lineup on the other hand just didn’t show up until the final game and they just allowed themselves to look like a little league team. Don’t know if it was great Giants starting pitching for the Giants or just horrible hitting by the Tigers…

Starting Pitching: DET C/SF B+: The Pitching advantage was thought to be in the Tigers favor. With Verlander/Scherzer and Fister it was looking like the Giants were going to be dominated. Then game 1 came around and the Giants decided to just completely debunk the myth that Great starting pitching can trump hot hitting every time. The Giants came in hot off of the Game 7 in the NLCS, and we all thought that Verlander was going to cool those bats off and he got lit up like a xmas tree. After that it was all downhill for the Tigers. Whereas the Giants starting pitching was hot late in the CS and stayed hot in the World Series. Cain/Bumgardener and Volglesong were the aces that the Giants needed them to be, And it lead to a world championship…

Bullpen: DET D/SF A-: This is where the series was really separated between the teams. The Giants bullpen came up big in pretty much every situation that it was necessary. Romo was the closer the that the Giants needed and Lincicum ended up being a blessing after struggling to get a decent inning during the regular season. He was yet again a big part of why the Giants were even in the Series yet alone able to sweep a team that was a far superior match. And yes Giants fans you finally have something to be proud of the Giants won a series that they were the underdog in and they are the World Series champions….
