The Giants came into this series expecting to dominate the Reds.
They were the NL West champion and on a very hot streak of games. Except for
losing to the Dodgers in the final game of the season. They opened up the
series with a couple of tough losses in San Francisco and went back to
Cincinnati with almost no hope of pulling out the series. Then came Game 3 and
the run was on. The Giants won the 3rd game in extra innings only
scoring 2 runs in the game. They then proceeded to score 14 runs over the next
2 games including a Grand Slam from NL MVP hopeful C Buster Posey. They
completed something no other NL team has done in the history of the NL that
feat was to comeback from a 2-0 deficit and win a NLDS series on the road. So
congrats to the Giants now on to the NLCS….
NLDS – San Francisco
Giants (3), Cincinnati Reds (2)
Offense: The
Giants had a very slow start to this series with the bats. The first 2 games of
the series the Giants put up 2 runs and 9 hits in their own ballpark. This
anemic performance resulted in the 2-0 deficit that the Giants had to deal with
early in the series. But once the Giants bats woke up late in Game 3 they never
went back to sleep. The Giants put up 16 runs and 23 hits in the 3 games in
Cincinnati and that is what lead to the Giants pulling off an amazing comeback
in this series. So watchout whoever they face because this team is ready to hit…
Pitching: The
Starting pitching for the Giants has not been very good for this series. They
have managed to get a little hotter over the last couple of games. Matt Cain’s
5 1/3 innings of work in Game 5 is the deepest that a Giants Starter pitched
all series. This has got to change in the next round the starting pitchers need
to be going at least 6 innings in order for the Giants to have a chance to
advance past the next round. But overall a decent performance but I don’t know
how the Giants are gonna do it unless the Starting Pitching gets more solid…
Bullpen: The
bullpen has been huge during the Giants run over the Reds in this years NLDS.
They got strikeouts when it was needed and held the Reds offense hitless at
times giving the batters an opportunity to make the comebacks after the
starters had put them nto a hole to start the game. This bullpen is the real
deal though Romo has locked down the closing role, and now they have Timmy
pitching long relief which bolsters this bullpen and make it World Series
worthy. Keep an eye on this because if they fall apart I don’t know if the
Giants can make a run. Lets just hope they don’t…
