This is a series that was the most surprising to me of the
entire postseason. The Tigers came in just off a 5 game series against a good
Oakland team and then they ended up drawing the New York Yankees in the
Championship Series. The Yankees have a history of success in the ALCS and also
they have a power packed roster. But something must have turned on in Detroit
and turned off in New York with the loss of their captain Derek Jeter to an
ankle injury in Game 1. The Tigers took advantage of the wounded Yanks and beat
them up. In a series that should have went 6 or 7 games the Tigers crushed the
Yankees to sweep them for the 1st time since 1980 in the postseason…
2012 ALCS – Detroit Tigers
(4) New York Yankees (0)
Batting: DET A-/NYY
B: The hitting in this series was ver one-sided the Yankees hitting pretty
much disappeared after a late push in Game 1. Alex Rodriguez was benched for
the 1st time that I can remember. While the Tigers on the other hand
were just eating Yankees Pitching starting or otherwise alive as the Triple
Crown winner and his cohorts went wild on Yankees pitching and jumped out to
leads in every game in this series. But it was the consistency in hitting that
lead to the Tigers cruising to a 4 game sweep in this series…
Starting Pitching:
DET A/NYY B-: The starting pitching for the Yankees in this series was atrocious
giving up runs in the early innings of every game. The Yankees had to try to
fight back and just couldn’t overcome a staff that was lead by a Cy Young award
winning pitcher and former AL MVP. But lets get beyond Verlander…Fister,Scherzer
and company pitched extremely well against a good Yankees hitting and held them to anemic
numbers at the plate. This staff looks ready for the World Series…
Bullpen: DET B-/NYY C
: This is where the 2 teams separated themselves. The Tigers have such good
starting pitching that when you get to the bullpen they only need to get 3-6
outs to close out the game. When you SP staff is that good it makes it kinda
easy frot eh bullpen. The Tigers hitters on average had knocked out the Yankees
starter by the 5th inning. That is a lot of work for a bullpen that wasn’t
very deep. The Starting Pitching that has carried the Yankees for years finally
let them down and the Tigers are headed to the World Series because of it…
