The Barry Bonds vs The Hall of Fame dispute. Should Barry
get in?...
Hey
class today we are going to talk about what has become a very sensitive subject
amongst MLB fans. That taboo subject is steroids a subject so bad that people don’t
want to even admit it was a part of baseball. Well kids im here to tell ya it’s
not going away anytime soon and the old fogies who vote in HOF’s and say that no
one who was involved in that era will ever be inducted. That brings me to the poster boy for the “Steroid”
movement Barry Bonds…
Barry,
Barry, Barry… This subject has really been talked to death but I bring it up now because I am sitting at
home the other day reading an article about weather or not Barry should be
inducted and of course the grand
consensus was that he shouldn’t be. This is where I differ from the general
consensus. I think that Barry should get in, I think that McGwire should get
in, I think that the “Steroid Era” should have its own wing in the hall of
fame. The reasoning behind this logic is that as much as we may vilify the
people who “cheated” during this time in baseball. It is as much a part of the
game as the apple pie is a part of American culture. From the mid 80’s till the
late 90’s it was pretty much a known fact that pretty much everyone during that
time was using steroids. At least in my opinion they all were. These hitters
are parts of American Baseball history.they have a place in baseball fans such
as mine’s hearts. And Steroids or not I know
I personally watched the ball fly out of the park almost 100 times between
Canseco, McGwire, Bonds hit them. And I will tell you that you know what just
about 100% of them would have been out of the park Steroids or not. Remember 2 things for me the next time you are
having the “Steroids” conversation. Number One McGwire set the rookie record
for HR’s at 48 before he ever touched the juice. And Bonds had hit at least 30 HR’s a season
for the 1st 5-6 seasons of his career before arriving in San Fran.
these guys were already Home Run hitters the juice just made them hit the ball
farther. This is why I say you allow them their rightful place amongst the
greats . But what you do is separate them and you hold them up on a different pedestal
and you make them a memory of a time that should be long over with by now with
the new more strict and severe punishment and testing in baseball. But what
should not happen is for them to be banned and swept under the carpet like they
didn’t happen. These men didn’t actually hurt anyone but themselves they didn’t
hurt any purity of the game. They played a game they loved and to tell the
truth they played it well and put up good enough numbers to deserve being in
the Hall of Fame. And any one who wants to tell me that they set a bad image
for baseball if I remember correctly Mickey Mantel was a womanizer and Babe
Ruth was a drunk. But we still remember them and their legacy’s fondly. These
men made a mistake that they will be physically punished for, for the rest of
their lives at least let them know that the game they love recognizes them for
the blood sweat and tears they put in for many years of their lives. I say let
them have at least this a Hall of Fame Plaque in a different wing that denotes them as members of the steroid
era and give them their due….
So
take away from this what you will but I want to put out there in the world that
this era existed and it is nothing to be ashamed of. So should Barry Bonds be
in the grand ol Hall of Fame…Yes he should. Take that lesson and run with it
kids for today….Class is Dismissed….
