Well students first I will say welcome back for another day
of Double K’s classroom. Today we are going to talk history. History you may
ask yourself what is he talking about. What im talking about is an institution that
up until 22 years ago only accepted white males. Im talking about Augusta
National Golf Course. This institution has been the epitome of exclusive since
its inception in the 1930’s….
Think about it like this it took 60-70 years before they
allowed their 1st black member and that was a huge deal because in
my opinion if there was no Tiger Woods to prove that blacks can play golf at a
high level like their white/other counterparts. We would still be trying to get
them to open the doors to blacks. But it happened and they did open their doors
to Blacks. Since that hurdle has already been jumped we now have the situation
from earlier this year. Even though the fight to admit women dates back over 10
years. The situation im thinking of involved the CEO of IBM Virginia Rometty
who after taking the job of CEO was left in question for something that as a sponsor
of the Masters. The previous 4 CEO’s all received memberships to the Gold
Course. But with them not allowing women what were they to do?? It looked as if
Augusta was going to have a PR nightmare and they did. But as usual the members
of the golf club went and gathered in their lockaway room. They went up there
and figured out that if they didn’t change something soon there was going to be
some major backlash. So in true Augusta they decided way after the fact that
they were going to allow women thru the doors of their prestigious
establishment. But here is the catch the 2 women members that they did allow
had nothing to do with the woman that got rejected. Will they offer her a
membership? Only time will tell but the fact that they finally let 2 in is a
good sign for the years to come that we will see a lot more women on the
Augusta Golf Course. Maybe even a LPGA tour event there including some of the
top members of that tour….
The
ultimate lesson here is that never is never good. But late is better than
never. But that doesn’t make it all ok the good ol’ boys in Georgia took a last
ditch effort to make the best of a bad PR situation. But that dosent get them
off the hook they are still one of the hardest and most exclusive memberships
to obtain. But for now Condalezza Rics and Darla Moore enjoy your place in
history cause you will go down in history as the 1st 2 women to
grace the course in Augusta…Till later kids…Class is dismissed…
