Hey guys welcome back to the class room. Today we are going
to be discussing a debate that has been going on literally 2/3rds of a baseball
season. It all surrounds one man one pitcher. That young man is Washington
Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasberg who the Nationals have had this sort of
timer on his season. Setting a limit on innings of between 160-180 innings…
Now
Strasberg has been a phenom from minuet one as soon as he was drafted. And he
lived up to all of the hype racing through the minor league system of the
Nationals and debuting with the major league team late in his 1st
season. He performed well when he
arrived at the Major League level. I believe that he had 14 strikeouts in his
debut against the Braves. Whatever it was the kid looked amazing and definantly
major league ready. But then came the injury and after that Tommy john surgery.
Then the slow return process as Strasberg went thru this. We all questioned
will the young arm come back the same. The same dominant force that he was when
he debuted in the league. So fast forward to the beginning of this season. The Nationals
announce from the beginning of the season that regardless of their position in
the standings, or their playoff contention. The team is shutting down the young
pitcher after 160-180 innings. This has been the topic of many debates and most
have been against shutting the kid down.
But this voice here is going to say I agree. From a business standpoint
this makes sense. I can see as a fan how you could say “what are you talking
about we are in the middle of the pennant race and a favorite to win the NL
title!!” Yes I understand but lets look at it like this if he gets hurt and
further damages his arm he may not be the same for the rest of his career. And
then what of the future of the team? That is what the owners are attempting to
protect…the future. Have you ever heard of the saying “live to fight another
day!” Sitting the young arm now can almost guarantee you will be competing for
NL Pennants for years to come….
So
students what im trying to say is don’t always do now what will risk your
future. When you can hold off and have a much brighter future. Till next time…Class
is Dismissed…
