Good Day students and
welcome to another addition of Double K’s class room. This weeks lesson is
about “Loyalty in sports today”… I know what an overdone topic… And just for
those that are thinking it not this is not all about LeBron and the “decision”
and though it may be referenced it is not what this weeks lesson is about…
This
week I want to speak to you about loyalty or should I say the lack of loyalty
that is shown in sports today. By players, fans and owners alike. Do you know
how many times I have heard that this team should have shown some LOYALTY to
that player.Or that player should have wanted to stay with his hometown or
rookie team do to some blind LOYALTY he owes them for drafting him. Look at the
end of the day the only loyalty that we all have fan player and owner alike is
to the all mighty dollar. The owner should be doing what is necessary to put a
WINNING product on the field so as to draw more fans out to the games. The
players risk their bodies and lives on a multi time a week or once a week
basis. So don’t get me wrong the players deserve to get their money and to
demand it to a certain extent due to what they risk and sacrifice from their
future in the case of the NFL! But the players need to understand to keep their
money demands within reason so the team can afford more than just you in their
pursuit to put a winning team on the field
or court or whatever you may play on. Now as fans we invest our precious
time and hard earned money in these teams and the least the teams could do is
try to keep ticket prices reasonable so that more of their fans wont be
inspired to watch the game from the couch. When they should be down at the
stadium drinking beer and enjoying the game with friends. And don’t even get me
started on how much concessions are at parks these days. But on to the lesson…
Loyalty
in its purest example has been shown in every way to all involved in the Alex
Smith vs 49ers vs Niner Nation. Look yes the 49ers supposedly “spurrned” QB Alex Smith by taking their shot at Future
Hall of famer….i repeat Future Hall of Famer Payton Manning. I don’t see it
like that… the fact of the matter is that if you have a shot an opportunity a
sniff at signing someone of Manning caliber you take your shot and you let the
cards fall where they may and if Alex Smith doesn’t understand that then he is
either delusional or doesn’t know football at all and you would think growing
up in California and watching the 49ers of his childhood Alex of all people would understand. Loyalty was shown by the team to its fanbase
by making a serious and legitament attempt to make this team that was already
good last year even better this season. And finally Loyalty was recently shown
by Alex Smith to the 49er faithful to attempt one more year to prove that the
pick that they spent on him and his ne shiny 3 year contract are worth it. As a
49er faithful I look forward to the upcoming season because if that’s what Alex
Smith could do with a receiving core that consisted mainly of Vernon Davis
Michael Crabtree and whatever receiver decided to catch the ball that week. I
cant wait to see how he will fair in the 2nd year with the same
offense and coordinator. Alex Smith is a athlete who can be taught to play the
position of Quarterback. Will he ever be the long term answer as shown by the 3
year contract not even the Niners are sure but is he a great option for right
now. If last year is any inkiling then things are looking up in San Francisco a
Lombardi trophy may soon be in sight. So always remember class loyalty is not
always shown in traditional ways but if you look real hard you can see its
still out there in everything we see…. For now class is dismissed….till next
week my students…
