2012-13 Season Outlook for the San Francisco 49ers (Part
2:Defense)...
Today
class we are going to talk about the 49ers and this time we are gonna get
gritty and dirty with the boys who get down and dirty for the defense. There weren’t
any big free agent signings in the offseason for the defense….
Coming
off a defensive years for the ages being one of the Top 3 defenses in the
league in most statistical categories. After all of that its still not the most
impressive thing they did last season. The 49ers defense did not allow a
rushing touchdown until I believe week 13 last season. That is impressive and
they return the big 4 (McDonald,Sopoaga,Smith, Jean Francois) and look to get
more production out of the depth (Tukuafu, Dobbs) which should solidify the Dline
for this coming season. You throw in Aldon Smith into that rotation and you
have another tough year for RB’s against the Niners defense. Next up we look at
what is returning basically the best 2 man line backing core outside of Lewis
and Suggs in Baltimore. Patrick Willis and NaVarro Bowman to tough guys that
held down the middle of the field for the 49ers opening up the doors for the
Line to get to the QB along with the DB’s. Eventhough the LB core lost a little
depth in losing rookie LB Darius Fleming but they will be fine returning most
of the starters and backups from last season. So they should be fine on the
front 7 in 2013…..
Now
moving on the the defensive backfield. A unit that last year far surpassed
expectations. The front 7 held the running game in check while the CB’s and Safeties
attacked the QB’s mentally cutting off lanes and coming up with big pick after big pick. I can think of at
least three different games I watched last season in which the defense getting a
big pick late in the 4th saved the game for the team so after
returning Carlos Rodgers and the
emerging Tarell Brown and Chris Culliver the team has a good start they did add
Parrish Cox and brought back Tramaine Brock to give them some depth in case of
injury. The returning Donte Whitner and hopefully Dashon Goldson should return
on of the best safety combos the 49ers have had in a long time. So expect
another solid year from a defensive unit that was already solid and is only a
year better…
Now
after talking about all that I will give you my final prediction for the 49ers
and its this simple this is a 10 win team with a solid head coach. So again
this year they will win 10+ games going
11-5 on the season it should be enough to win the NFC West again but will they
again be a 2 seed I don’t know. But I know that come next season they will
compete for a Super Bowl because at minimum this is a playoff team and they
will prove that. So till next time….class is dismissed…
