What are the needs for the 3-10 San Fran 49ers...
Introduction
The question of what are the needs of the 49ers? Is a tough one to answer...there are just so many needs. So let's begin with what i feel they have solid depth and skill at that position. I'll start with RB if they choose to keep Hyde in the fold the Bredia and Hyde will make a pretty good backfield along with Williams. The tight end position is pretty much locked up with Kittle and Celek playing well for most of this season. At wideout i think they have a solid group of receivers, Garcon, Goodwin and Taylor are all good young players that just need a QB to run routes for. On the defensive side of the ball this team is still pretty stacked and will only get better with another year playing together under their belt. Where i will begin the look is in the one place they are in need of help the most...
Offensive Line
The O Line has been a straight disaster this season and it has driven me crazy. At one point there was a stretch where the 49er lost 5 consecutive games by 3pts or less. It looked as if they were at least going to be competitive this season. Then the train went off the rails and the team became a hot mess. The beginning of this was deterioration of the offensive line as injuries and bad play led to an atrocious offense ran by a subpar QB. Which led to the benching and eventual release of starting QB Brian Hoyer, they have gone out and found a suitable replacement in young stud QB Jimmy Garoppolo. But the O Line is still pathetic, unless they address it this off season they will continue to struggle next season. There will be options all over the line to upgrade from what they have right now. They have like the 2nd most dollars in salary cap space and only a medium sized chunk will be used to give Jimmy G his contract extension or franchise tag him. So that means that the rest can be spent on strengthening the offensive line. OS far this season Jimmy G has been great behind a porous offensive line, so imagine how well he could play if they had a top tier o-line…
Defensive Backfield
The front 7 for the 49ers has been pretty great all season long, they have had their ups and downs but for the most part have been one of the better units in the league. The past 3 weeks they have been pretty stout allowing less than 100 yards per game during that stretch. But the 49ers secondary can not make the same claims the rotating starters at the CB position have been mediocre at best. So this offseason needs to address this whole to make the defense one of the best in the game, they have 2 ways to address the need for a defensive back. They could use their top pick in the 2018 draft to draft the top defensive back available and hope that the rookie turns out to be an impact player year 1. Or they could put a little money into the position for their number one guy in free agency and look to add depth in the backfield. This would help this defense become elite very...very fast….
Quarterback
This was an issue when i began to write this article a few weeks back but then the 49er management got smart and traded away their own 2nd round pick to the Patriots and gt back their future at the QB position in Jimmy Garoppolo and they have a great backup in the 2nd yr QB CJ Bethard so with that stable the 49ers can move forward and look to address the other major holes listed in this article….
